Our Story
On the Beach Bed & Breakfast, located in Cayucos, California is a destination for out-of-town travelers and locals alike to experience the charming lifestyle that this classic beach town has to offer. Being a small, family-owned business, On the Beach strives to provide high-end service to their guests by offering them a relaxing boutique hotel experience through their gourmet bed and breakfast meal options, unmatched views of California’s Central Coast, and a high standard for hospitality.
The Owners
Mike Patrick
Mike Patrick is a lifelong San Luis Obispo local and co-owner of On The Beach Bed & Breakfast. With a background in income property finance and investment, Mike brings decades of business experience, strategic thinking, and heart to the guest experience.
He co-founded Sunrise Mortgage and Investment Company in 1983 and holds an Associate of Arts in Business from Cuesta College, along with studies in Real Estate at San Diego State University. Known for his curiosity, analytical mindset, and commitment to doing things the right way, Mike believes in understanding the fundamentals, managing risk thoughtfully, and always adding value.
Deeply rooted in the community, Mike has served on numerous local boards and played a key role in rebuilding the San Luis Obispo Children’s Museum. He and his wife, DD, recently celebrated 45 years of marriage and are proud parents and grandparents.
When he’s not being a “Beach Dude,” Mike enjoys music, travel, hiking, skiing, and cheering on Cal Poly athletics. At On The Beach, he blends thoughtful leadership with laid-back coastal hospitality, helping create a stay that feels both relaxed and genuinely cared for.
Richard Shannon
Jeanne Helphenstine
Jeanne Helphenstine is a fourth-generation San Luis Obispo County native and co-owner of On The Beach Bed & Breakfast. Raised on a local dairy farm, Jeanne’s roots in agriculture and community run deep.
Jeanne began her real estate career in 1984 and has spent more than four decades working throughout San Luis Obispo County, with a strong focus on new residential developments and custom home building. Her passion for building has carried through both her professional work and personal projects, including the design and construction of multiple custom homes.
Highly engaged in the Central Coast community, Jeanne is involved with several professional and civic organizations and has long been an advocate for responsible growth and private property rights. Her experiences extend well beyond the Central Coast, as she has lived abroad and competed internationally as a member of San Luis Obispo High School FFA’s nationally recognized dairy cattle judging team.
Outside of work, Jeanne enjoys traveling, hiking, great food and wine, and spending time with friends and family. At On The Beach, she brings a strong sense of place, care, and community, helping ensure every stay reflects the spirit of the Central Coast.Richard K. Shannon is the Managing Partner of On The Beach Bed & Breakfast and a respected real estate professional with deep roots in San Luis Obispo County. Richard has been active in local real estate sales for nearly five decades and currently serves as a Broker Associate with Century 21 Masters in Paso Robles.
Throughout his career, Richard has held numerous leadership roles within the real estate industry, including co-founding Peabody & Plum Realtors, serving as President of the North County Association of Realtors, and acting as a California Association of Realtors State Director. He has also spent more than 30 years on the North County Association of Realtors Professional Standards Committee, reflecting his long-standing commitment to integrity and best practices.
Over the course of his career, Richard has closed more than $600 million in real estate sales, and under his leadership, On The Beach Bed & Breakfast has earned thousands of five-star guest reviews.
Actively involved in the hospitality community, Richard is a member of the California Association of Bed and Breakfast and Inns and the California Hotel and Lodging Association, and serves on the board of the Visitors Alliance Cayucos.
Richard lives in Atascadero with his wife of 37+ years, Debbie, in the home they built together nearly four decades ago. They are proud parents and grandparents.
